ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chair Imran Khan will conduct a live telethon on Monday (August 29) at 9:30 pm to generate money for victims of arguably the fiercest floods in Pakistan’s history.
In a tweet, Fawad Chaudhry, senior vice president of his party, shared that Khan will hold the telethon between 9:30 pm (5:30 pm GMT+1) and 12:00 am to address members of the overseas Pakistani community.
“The chief ministers of Punjab [Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi] and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [Mahmood Khan] will also accompany him during the telethon,” he said.
Chaudhry added the telethon would also be broadcast on television if the court suspends a Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) ban on live coverage of Khan.
“Otherwise, it will be broadcast live on more than 500 accounts on digital platforms,” he said.
On Saturday, Khan, while addressing a public gathering in Jhelum, said he would help the flood-hit people but would not stop his campaign for real freedom.
He also announced the establishment of a relief fund to collect donations, adding that Sania Nishtar, a party leader who led the Ehsaas social welfare programme during Covid-19, would head the effort.
Khan said these were testing times and he believed Pakistan will come out of this crisis as a strong nation.
“Overseas Pakistanis have always stepped up, may it be the floods of 2010 or the Kashmir earthquake in 2005,” said Khan, while calling for the country’s vibrant diaspora to help their nation.
