Initial estimates: Heavy rains incur Rs5.5bn loss to KP’s economy

 PESHAWAR: The ongoing monsoon rains have incurred heavy loss to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) economy.

According to initial estimates, Rs3.66 billion have been lost due to the destruction of standing crops while livestock worth Rs2bn have washed away.

Director General Livestock Dr Alamzeb said that several districts, including South Waziristan, Dera Ismail Khan, Jandola, Swabi, Mohmand, Bajaur, Tank, Darazandah and Karak  have been affected due to the unusually long spell of monsoon rains.

The official data shows that so far, 1,261 cows, 36 buffaloes, 296 sheep and 547 goats have washed away in flash bloods, while a poultry farm with 3,711 chickens completely destroyed and five other poultry farms were partially damaged. Moreover, a total 65 animal sheds have been completely destroyed while 84 partially damaged.  

According to the Department of Agriculture, rains have incurred over Rs3.66bn loss to farmers and tons of dates have also been wasted in Southern districts of the province.
