Punjab, KP, GB assemblies pass resolutions against disqualification of PTI chief

PESHAWAR/LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly (PA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit Baltistan Assemblies on Saturday passed resolutions against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) verdict whereby it disqualified Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the Toshakhana reference.

In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, the resolution was moved by Minister for Higher Education Kamran Khan Bangash with Deputy Speaker Mahmood Khan in the chair in a hurriedly called emergency session, which was earlier adjourned till October 24 on Monday.

Minister for Finance Taimur Salim Jhagra, Minister for Housing Amjad Ali and Minister for Environment Ishtiaq Urmar spoke in favour of the resolution while the joint opposition staged protest against the speaker dice over his partial attitude for not allowing them to speak.

Later, the chair adjourned the assembly proceedings due to lack of quorum pointed out by PTI lawmaker till October 31, at 2pm. Parliamentary leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Sardar Muhammad Yousaf and ANP leader Sardar Hussain Babak, while talking to media outside the KP Assembly, condemned passage of the resolution against ECP, terming it an illegal and unconstitutional act of the provincial assembly.

The joint opposition also condemned the partial attitude of Deputy Speaker Mahmood Jan who is unable to run the KP Assembly according to rules and law, they added.

In the Punjab Assembly, former Chief Minister Usman Buzdar tabled a resolution against the disqualification of the PTI chairman.

On the occasion, the opposition staged a protest in front of Speaker Dice and chanted slogans against the treasury benches. The resolution stated that “ECP’s decision is based on malice, and the purpose of such a decision is tantamount to harming Pakistan.”

The resolution stated that the ECP’s verdict against Imran Khan is against the law and the constitution, and the country’s most honourable political leader has been disqualified on false charges.

The Supreme Court has declared Imran Khan as “Sadiq and Amin”. Imported rulers cannot compete with Imran Khan in the political arena. The House of Punjab Assembly rejects the decision of the Election Commission, it added.

Meanwhile, a separate resolution was tabled in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) assembly and condemned the PTI Chairman’s disqualification.
