The police force in Karachi seems to be nothing but partners in crime. Such a perception is gaining strength among the masses because nothing else rationalises the spike in crimes and almost zero accountability.
It has been pointed out repeatedly and for many years that the proportion of locals in the police force is minimal; the personnel are either from other provinces or from the interior of Sindh. Regardless of the reason behind it, what this lopsided equation has ensured is that the police force, as a unit, has no bonding with the local population and feels no obligation to serve the city with sincerity and loyalty. Despite being paid from the city’s resources, the personnel treat the city as an alien abode. They are here on an assignment and want to make the most of this opportunity.
Karachi, the biggest contributor to the national exchequer, is perceived as a goldmine by these outsiders and every opportunity is exploited to mint money. It is strange that the incidents of street crimes are rising despite the long-term presence of the paramilitary force in the city. How long will Karachi be given this step-motherly treatment?
