KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday prevented police from arresting Shahbaz Gill, a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader, for a second time on sedition charges pressed against him for criticising the powerful military.
The order was issued during a hearing on the plea moved by Gill to quash the cases registered against him in Karachi.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer pleaded with the court to stop the police from arresting Gill until the final decision in the case.
Gill submitted in the petition that police had registered three cases against him at several police stations, and requested the court to dismiss them.
At this, the bench stopped police from arresting Gill and adjourned the hearing.
The one-time chief of staff to former prime minister Imran Khan also urged the court for an immediate hearing of the plea, which was turned down by the bench.
It may be noted that on December 22, a district and sessions court in Islamabad issued a bailable arrest warrant for Gill over his prolonged absence in the same case.
