Elahi chairs UoG convocation, okays key projects for varsity

GUJRAT: The 7TH convocation of the University of Gujrat (UoG) was held here at Hafiz Hayat Campus on Friday with Punjab Chief Minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi chairing the ceremony and approving a few key development projects costing hundreds of millions of rupees for the varsity.

Ch Pervaiz Elahi, who is the co-founder of the institution, during his address on the occasion, expressed his satisfaction over the progress made by the university in all these years.

“I am really happy to know that a 62 per cent of the students at the varsity are girls from Gujrat and various adjoining districts,” he said.

“It is my firm conviction that a country or a nation cannot make any progress without investing in education,” he declared.

He told the students amid a loud cheer of applause that during a meeting with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shabbar Atiq, he had given approval for the construction of a girls hostel at a cost of Rs420 million, eight buses for student pick-and-drop at a cost of Rs150 million, in addition to the construction of a state-of-the-art IT lab that will cost Rs40 million.

He also threw some light on an ambitious development plan for Gujrat city aimed at making it a true centre of excellence.

Earlier, upon his arrival at the campus, the chief minister was warmly received by Prof. Dr Shabbar Atiq along with his team of senior academics and administration officials.

During a meeting at his office, the vice chancellor briefed the chief minister about the various educational activities as well as the progress and achievements made by the varsity in the field of research and development.

Later, he was led to the venue of the ceremony in front of the Quaid-e-Azam Library. He conferred degrees upon 2000 graduates from various departments. He also awarded gold medals to 158 toppers from various departments.

Pride of Gujrat member European Parliament for life Lord Wajid Khan was conferred upon an honorary doctorate of philosophy in recognition of his struggle for human rights and support to the just cause of Kashmiris fighting Indian oppression. An oath ceremony was conducted for the NSMC graduates of 2012-17 and 2013-18 sessions.
