A reduction of 60 per cent in wheat quota of flour mills has created a flour crisis across the country, including Punjab. Flour has become a rare commodity in the market. Citizens are forced to wait for hours outside Utility Stores to get flour bags. If the government does not take emergency measures to prevent the artificial shortage of flour, the situation will go out of control. The price of wheat has reached the highest level in the country’s history with a bag of 40kg being sold at Rs3,700, while flour is not available even at Rs130 per kg. People are frustrated. Profit-making enterprises are suffering losses and presenting a scene of chaos and devastation. Both the government and the main opposition parties have disappointed the people and hurt their sentiments. The government needs to take measures to ensure a smooth supply of flour on a controlled price sooner rather than later.
