Federal govt constitutes JIT to probe Wazirabad attack case

LAHORE: The federal government on Monday also constituted a joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate the Wazirabad attack on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

Inspector General (IG) Railway Police Rao Sardar Ali Khan has been appointed as the convener of the JIT, while DIG Kamran Adil along with representatives of Military Intelligence (MI), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) have also been made part of the team.

After the approval of the federal cabinet, the Ministry of Interior issued the notification for the formation of the JIT. The team will investigate the case registered in Wazirabad and submit its report to the home ministry.

The development comes a day after the Punjab Home Department issued a notification for the replacement of four members of the JIT probing the gun attack on PTI chief Imran Khan on Nov 3 last year.

The move came after differences emerged between Lahore CCPO Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, who is leading the investigation and the other four members of the team.

As per the notification, all four members have been changed for developing differences with the Lahore CCPO. The notification was dated back to Jan 14, whereby the new members were appointed under the chairmanship of the CCPO.

Moreover, the prime accused in the alleged assassination attempt on Imran Khan also challenged the JIT probing the matter.

Naveed, who allegedly shot the former premier, had filed an application before the Interior Ministry, claiming that the JIT was showing political malice.

The application added that differences among members of the investigation team were confirmed in official correspondence.
