Karachi’s first monkeypox case takes country’s overall tally to four

KARACHI: The first monkeypox (mpox) case reported in Karachi on Thursday has taken the overall tally in the country to four.

According to Sindh Health Department, medical tests of a man serving as driver in Jeddah who returned back to Pakistan through Oman having monkeypox symptoms were conducted and found affected of the disease.

After being detected with monkeypox, the affectee was isolated and further investigation in this connection was underway.

It should be mentioned here that monkeypox is a rare viral zoonotic disease that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Although the natural reservoir of monkeypox remains unknown, African rodents and non-human primates like monkeys may harbour the virus and infect people.
