Punjab govt launches online portal for approval of affordable housing schemes

LAHORE: The Government Digital Services wing of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has taken a step towards facilitating affordable housing schemes by launching an online portal for the approval process. This new initiative, in collaboration with the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA), aims to streamline the application and documentation process, making it more convenient and efficient for citizens, Profit learnt here on Friday.

According to the spokesperson of the digital service wing, the online portal allows users to register and submit all the necessary documents electronically, eliminating the need for multiple visits to government offices.

“With this digital platform, applicants can conveniently access the services from their homes or offices, thereby saving valuable time and resources. The introduction of the online portal is expected to have a positive impact on reducing bureaucratic hurdles and eliminating corrupt practices,” she said.

Muhammad Waseem Bhatti, the Director General of the Government Digital Services wing at PITB, highlighted the advantages of this new service. He explained that it not only offers convenience but also plays a crucial role in eradicating corruption from the housing sector. Bhatti further revealed that PITB’s Government Digital Services wing has already successfully implemented a similar service for the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) through e-Khidmat centers.

It is pertinent to mention here that PHATA is responsible for identifying state and other lands for developing low-income and low-cost housing schemes and providing technical assistance to the District Governments. The agency has a checklist of documents for private sponsors who want to apply for approval of housing schemes. The application must be complete and legal to be considered for approval.

However, according to various sources, the housing shortage in Punjab, Pakistan is estimated to be between 2.3 million and 5.5 million units. The Government of Punjab estimates the housing shortage in the province to be 2.5 million units.
