Breaches in Mirwah Canal damage standing crops over 25,000 acres of land

BADIN: Breach in Mirwah Canal at five different points near Seerani Town roundabout on Tuesday damaged standing crops over 25,000 acres of land.

According to officials and farmers, Badin district received heavy to moderate sporadic rain on Tuesday which led to overflow of canals in the district. Due to the increase inflow of water, breaches occurred in Mirwah Canal at five different points near Seerani Town, which damaged standing crops over more than 25,000 acres of land including paddy, tomatoes and cotton.

The Irrigation officials, a 20-wide feet breach occurred in Mirwah Canal near village Soomar Mandhro, 30-wide feet breach occurred at village Kareem Bux Chang, a 25-wide feet breach occurred in village Sehlo Mandhro while a 40-wide-feet breach in Mirwah Canal occurred in village Khan Mandhro Maleho.

Local people on self-help basis started efforts to plug the breaches but due to overflow of water, all such efforts remained futile. On the other hand, despite repeated appeals by the villagers, the Irrigation Department and other departments concerned did not pay any heed to plug the breaches, till filing of this report.

The villagers expressed the fear that more breaches in the canal could occurred if water flow was not reduce, which will bring more devastation in the area.

It is pertinent to mention that standing crops over thousands acres in several villages including Kareem Bux Chang, Rajo Chang, Majno Khaskheli, Ishaque Khaskheli, Karim Dino Junejo, Khan Mandhro and others can be damaged if concrete steps were not taken by the departments concerned.
