PTI’s Sher Afzal Marwat booked over brawl in talk show

ISLAMABAD: Following a brawl with PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan on a television show, a case was registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawyer Sher Afzal Marwat.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s lawyer Sher Afzal Khan Marwat and PML-N Senator Dr Afnan Ullah Khan were recently involved in a brawl on a television show.

The lawyer and senator were having a heated argument that ended up using abusive language when all of a sudden Marwat attacked the senator.

The FIR was filed at the Aabpara Police Station under Section 352 (Punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation) and Section 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The case was registered after Senator Afnanullah sent a letter to Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Operation Islamabad Malik Jamil Zaffar seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Marwat.

He said Marwat “physically assaulted him, slapped him three times and beat him while he was nearly unconscious on the floor.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf condemned the registration of unlawful and mala fide FIR against Senior member PTI legal team and spokesperson Mr Sher Afzal Khan Marwat.

In a short statement issued on X, formerly known as twitter, the party spokesperson regretted that the repeated abuse of the process of law against members of the Imran Khan legal team are aimed to harass the lawyers.

It added: “PTI believes the courts will deal the matter in a judicious manner.”

Marwat also seeks FIR registration against PML-N senator

Meanwhile, Marwat told Dawn.com that he will apply for pre-arrest bail at the relevant court in the FIR registered against him.

Marwat said he also submitted a request to register an FIR against the senator at the Margalla police station under Sections 25D of the Telegraph Act and PPC 506.

He added that he would refer to the courts if the report was not lodged by Sunday.

“First Afnan said he had hit me … but in the FIR it was stated that he was hit and he fainted,” Marwat added, saying that there were contradictory messages from the senator.

He also alleged that Afnan made the request on the official Senate letterhead. “He tried to influence the case. He sent the Senate director to the police station.”

Marwat accused the PML-N leader of abusing his office which was “unbecoming of any parliamentarian”.

“I will refer to the Election Commission of Pakistan and constitutional courts pertaining to his disqualification according to Article 62,” he concluded.

However, the senator rejected the allegation when talking to Dawn.com, saying that he had submitted an ordinary application for an FIR instead of through the Senate letterhead.

Later, Marwat posted on X that he had “left Islamabad to avoid arrest”.
