Gujranwala’s court reserves verdict on sedition case against Capt (r) Safdar

GUJRANWALA: A local court in Gujranwala on Saturday reserved its verdict on a sedition case against Capt (r) Safdar, a PML-N leader and husband of PML-N Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz.

Judicial Magistrate Faisalul Islam conducted hearing of the case and reserved the verdict after hearing arguments put forth by both the parties, which will be pronounced on Monday (Oct 30).

The sedition case was registered against Capt (r) Safdar on October 3, 2020, at in the Gujranwala’s Satellite Town police station in which he was accused of delivering speeches provoking people against institutions and committing sedition.

Earlier, the Judicial Magistrate Bilal Munir had issued a bailable arrest warrant for Captain Safdar.

The prosecution maintained that Capt (r) Safdar had talk against the state institutions during a presser in the session court, which created a threat to peace in the country.

“The media talk of Capt (r) Safdar is objectionable and its content falls under the category of treason and the text of the conversation of the accused is very serious and relevant to the crime.”

The prosecution has requested that action be taken against the accused Capt (r) Safdar under Section 124 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

‘Landmark verdict’

Meanwhile, Capt (r) Safdar said on Saturday it would be a landmark verdict. Talking to media persons outside court, he said court would announce its ruling on Monday (tomorrow). “We are waiting for the decision as it will be a historic decision,” he said.

Earlier, the district and sessions courts Islamabad had issued non-bailable arrest warrant for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill in the sedition case. Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra heard the case on Wednesday and directed the SHO to arrest the proclaimed offender and produce him before the court. The court ended the trial of co-accused Ammad Yousaf following the Supreme Court direction.
