Gokina Smart Village: A digital oasis in Islamabad’s mountains

ISLAMABAD: In a momentous achievement, the Gokina Smart Village project has captured global acclaim, heralding a commitment from authorities to replicate its success not only across various parts of Pakistan but also beyond. Nestled in the mountainous region of Islamabad, Gokina has grappled with the challenges of inadequate essential services, particularly in education and healthcare.

Hassan Nasir Jamy, Federal Secretary for the Ministry of IT Telecommunication, lauded the Gokina project’s success as a pivotal milestone in the journey towards a Digital Pakistan. Speaking at the “Thriving Together with Tech: Realizing Sustainable Development” event organized by Huawei in China, Jamy underscored the project’s strategic importance.

The initiative primarily revolves around online learning at a girls’ school, strategically addressing the shortage of science teachers. Furthermore, an e-clinic has been established to counter the deficiency of medical facilities in the village and its surrounding areas.

Ethan Sun, CEO of Huawei Technologies Pakistan, emphasized that the Gokina Smart Village Project extends beyond mere connectivity; it aspires to transform lives by tackling challenges such as limited access to essential services. The success story of the project was presented alongside other noteworthy global initiatives during the event.

These included a floating solar power house in Ghana, boosting productivity at a local coffee processing plant and encouraging farmers to opt for value addition instead of selling raw materials. Digitization played a pivotal role in promoting organic agro farming in Italy and revitalizing a historic tourist town in China.

Huawei’s commitment to bridging the digital divide took center stage, with a pledge to bring connectivity to over 120 million people in remote areas across 80 countries by 2025 through its participation in the International Telecommunication Union’s Partner2Connect Digital Coalition.

Ahmed Bilal Masud, Deputy CEO and Director Subsidiary Board Huawei Pakistan, outlined plans to extend the success of Gokina to other areas of Pakistan, focusing on education, health, and digital skills. In a world increasingly reliant on digital connectivity, the Gokina Smart Village Project stands as a testament to the transformative power of technology, fostering economic growth, environmental sustainability, and inclusive development.
