China listed among top 10 global innovative nations

ISLAMABAD: China is among the 10 most innovative countries, according to the latest global innovation ranking published by the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development on Tuesday.

The academy has issued a report on the ranking, saying that it surveyed the innovative capacities of 40 countries, which together account for more than 95 percent of global R&D investment and over 85 percent of the global GDP.

China rose to the 10th place, up three slots from the 2022 rankings, and it is the only developing country to break into the top 15, according to the report.

In recent years, China’s innovation capabilities have made significant progress, rising rapidly from the 38th place in 2000 to the 20th place in 2011, and then steadily rising to the 10th place.

Moreover, the report noted that the geography of global innovation has not changed much. Asia, North America and Europe continue to lead the global innovation landscape as regions, with a strengthened eastward innovation shift.

China’s innovation capabilities significantly exceed countries at the same level of economic development, according to the report.

In terms of per capita GDP indicators, Russia, Mexico, Turkey and Argentina are middle- and high-income countries at similar development stage as China. However, China’s comprehensive performance in innovation capabilities, with relatively low per capita GDP, is much higher than these countries.

China is the only middle-income country with an R&D investment intensity of more than 2 percent, according to the report.
