ISLAMABAD: A delegation of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) met with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Monday to express concerns over the delimitation of constituencies and the level playing field for the upcoming general elections.
The MQM delegation, led by Farooq Sattar, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Javed Hanif, and Abdul Hafeez, raised objections to the way constituencies have been drawn in Sindh province, alleging that the process has been unfair and has benefited the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
MQM leaders also expressed concern about the role of a caretaker government in Sindh, saying that this has created an uneven playing field for all parties contesting the elections. They called on the Election Commission to take steps to ensure that the elections are free and fair.
CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja assured the MQM delegation that the Election Commission is committed to holding fair and transparent elections. He said that the commission will address all concerns raised by the MQM and other parties.
The MQM’s concerns come amid growing tension between the party and the PPP in Sindh. The two parties have been at odds over a number of issues, including the delimitation of constituencies and the role of the caretaker government.
The MQM is a major political force in Sindh and its concerns could have a significant impact on the outcome of the upcoming elections. The party’s leaders have warned that if the elections are not fair and transparent, there could be unrest in the province.
The Election Commission has a difficult task ahead of it in ensuring that the upcoming elections are free and fair. It will need to address the concerns of all parties and ensure that the electoral process is transparent and accountable.
