ISLAMABAD: Caretaker IT Minister Dr. Umar Saif has revealed an innovative strategy to establish a payment gateway for freelancers, enabling them to receive payments from foreign countries.
Addressing a growing demand among freelancers, Dr. Saif announced that platforms like PayPal will now be accessible in Pakistan, providing a streamlined method for freelancers to receive their earnings.
In a video message, Dr. Umar Saif explained that the program has been designed to simplify the process, eliminating the need for freelancers to open a PayPal account. Under the new system, individuals abroad can directly transfer funds to the freelancer’s bank account, bypassing the traditional requirement of a PayPal account.
Dr. Saif highlighted the global advancements in communication technology, specifically mentioning the in-orbit satellite communication technology. He noted that services like Starlink can now leverage this technology to offer Internet services worldwide.
To support such initiatives, Pakistan has formulated a cutting-edge space policy, positioning itself as one of the few countries with such an advanced framework. This policy allows private companies to enter the Pakistani market and deliver modern communication services to users, regardless of their location.
With the implementation of this policy, Dr. Saif emphasized that private entities can now provide internet facilities to users through contemporary communication solutions. This move marks a progressive step towards expanding communication services in Pakistan and aligning with global advancements in technology.
The Minister claimed that the caretaker government will initiate iPhone installment plan from January 12, 2024, saying the decision was taken in response to the persistent demand from freelancers. He emphasized that this initiative aims to empower freelancers to facilitate remittances through the international gateway PayPal.
Furthermore, Dr. Saif disclosed plans for the launch of 5G technology in July of the upcoming year, with an accompanying auction of 300 MHz of spectrum. The move is anticipated to usher in a new era of high-speed connectivity for the country.
Addressing the issue of responsible financial behavior, Dr. Saif detailed a collaboration with telecom stakeholders for the launch of an initiative on January 12, 2024. This program will enable consumers to acquire the latest model phones through easy installment plans. Notably, iPhones will be included in this offering. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will implement the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking Systems (DIRBS) to block handsets in case of installment payment failure.
Dr Saif clarified that the overarching goal of this policy is to promote responsible financial behavior and ensure the continuous expansion of smartphone penetration in the country. Telecom companies are poised to play a pivotal role by providing smartphones directly to consumers through installment plans, thereby extending the benefits of mobile broadband, especially to low-income segments.
