ISLAMABAD: Former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Wednesday took legal battle to the Supreme Court, challenging the decision of the Lahore High Court’s January 13 ruling, which upheld the Election Tribunal regarding the rejection of his nomination papers.
In the appeal filed, Pervaiz Elahi has targeted the Lahore High Court’s ruling on January 13, seeking the annulment of the decision. The rejection was based on objections raised by candidate Muhammad Salim, who alleged that Pervaiz Elahi holds shares in Lahore Modern Flour Mills.
Pervaiz Elahi contends that not only are the accused flour mills inactive, but no bank account has been opened in his name, and he vehemently denies purchasing any shares in the said flour mill. According to him, an inactive flour mill should not be considered as an asset.
The petition argues that disqualifying him from the election based on this flour mill contradicts established principles. Merely not disclosing an asset should not automatically result in disqualification, and the intention behind non-disclosure should be scrutinized.
Pervaiz Elahi asserts that the attributed value of the shares is a mere 24,850 rupees, a negligible amount compared to his total disclosed assets of 175 million rupees. Among these assets, he claims to have revealed over 57 million rupees in cash. He argues that the omission of such a small share cannot be considered malicious.
Furthermore, objections were raised regarding the non-disclosure of seven arms licenses. Pervaiz Elahi defends himself, stating that there is no column in the nomination papers for disclosing arms licenses.
The legal battle unfolds as Pervaiz Elahi fights to overturn the decisions that could impact his candidacy in the upcoming elections.
