‘NA-130’: Dr Yasmin Rashid challenges Nawaz Sharif’s victory in LHC

LAHORE: Dr Yasmin Rashid, the incarcerated leader of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), on Tuesday challenged the victory of PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from NA-130 Lahore.

Through a petition filed with the Lahore High Court’s election tribunal, Dr Yasmin Rashid pleaded that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had issued a notification of Nawaz Sharif’s victory contrary to the law, requesting the court to nullify it.

The LHC election tribunal, comprising Justice Sultan Tanvir Ahmad will hear the petition.

It is to be noted that earlier the victory of former prime minister from NA-130 was challenged in LHC on Feb 10. Nawaz Sharif had clinched the seat by grabbing 179,310 votes against PTI-backed Dr Yasmin Rashid who could get 104,485 votes. Rashid’s lawyer had said that she secured a lead of over 20,000 votes after the results of 334 out of 376 polling stations.

She stated her results were tempered during night with the help of police. “Our agents were expelled from the polling stations and over 100,000 votes were cast fraudulently in favour of Nawaz Sharif from the remaining 33 polling stations,” she had said.

However, the tribunal had dismissed the plea and maintained Nawaz’s victory.

Prior to the polls, the election appellate tribunals gave a clean chit to members of the Sharif family to contest the general elections after dismissing appeals filed by PTI leaders challenging the acceptance of the nomination papers for Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Maryam Nawaz.
