ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy embarks on Pakistan tour

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy has commenced its tour across Pakistan after being unveiled in Islamabad on Thursday.

Starting last month in the US, where the tournament’s opening match will be held, the Trophy Tour arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday night and is currently being showcased in front of the National Assembly in Islamabad.

Dubbed as “Out of this World”, the trophy will continue its three-day tour, making stops in Lahore and Abbottabad as well.

On Saturday, the trophy will be displayed at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore coinciding with Pakistan’s final match against New Zealand in the five-match T20I series at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The prestigious trophy is set to visit a total of 15 countries across four continents, gracing iconic stadiums and being celebrated by cricketing legends.

In addition to traditional cricketing powerhouses, the trophy will also journey to emerging cricketing nations like Brazil, Argentina, Canada, and others, aiming to foster greater interest and engagement with the sport.

Pakistan finds itself in Group A alongside arch-rivals India, with their highly anticipated clash scheduled for June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.

Here are the groups for the T20 World Cup 2024:

  • Group A: India, Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, United States
  • Group B: England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman
  • Group C: New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea
  • Group D: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal

With 20 qualifying teams divided into four groups, the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 round. From there, the top two teams from each group will proceed to the semi-finals and ultimately compete in the final.

This edition of the T20 World Cup marks the first time since 2010 that the tournament will be hosted in the West Indies, while it also signifies the first time such a major cricket event will be held in the US.

England, as the defending champions from the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, will be aiming to retain their title against stiff competition.
