Karachi police crack down on ATM robbery gang, leader arrested

KARACHI: The Counter Terrorism Department’s (CTD) Intelligence Wing has apprehended Asad Sajjad, the alleged mastermind behind a series of ATM robberies in Karachi.

The CTD spokesperson confirmed the arrest on Sunday, noting that the accused had targeted citizens withdrawing cash from bank ATMs.

Sajjad, recently released on bail, reportedly formed a new gang and resumed his criminal activities.

According to the spokesperson, Sajjad and his accomplices robbed approximately a dozen individuals on Saturday, including attempts in the Defence area. During one of these incidents, police intervention led to an encounter where one of the accomplices was killed.

The spokesperson further revealed that Sajjad had a prior arrest a few months ago for robbing a courier van but was subsequently released on bail. The latest arrest was facilitated by CCTV footage, which played a crucial role in identifying and capturing the suspect.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to apprehend other members of the gang.
