Sheikh Rashid calls for amnesty for May 9 riot detainees

RAWALPINDI: Former Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, on Monday, called on Army Chief General Asim Munir to grant amnesty to all those detained in connection with the May 9 riots.

Speaking to the media at the District Courts, the chief of the Awami Muslim League emphasized the suffering endured by those implicated in the May 9-related incidents. “People have suffered tremendously. All innocents must be granted amnesty,” Rashid stated.

He reiterated his appeal not only to General Munir but also to the ISI Director General, highlighting the limited power of the current ruling coalition and stressing the need for leniency towards those wrongfully detained.

Rashid also expressed his concern over the treatment of PTI women leaders Aalia Hamza and Sanam Javed, criticising their frequent transfers from one jail to another.

He warned that politicising issues like electoral forms would only lead to further economic devastation and political instability in the country.

In addition, responding to a question about the India-Pakistan T20 cricket match, Rashid commented on the emotional impact of the event on the Pakistani populace, noting that their feelings were hurt by the outcome.
