LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued an order for police to impound vehicles emitting smoke in an effort to combat the escalating smog threat in Lahore.
This directive was part of a ruling announced during a hearing by an LHC bench, which is addressing multiple pleas for judicial intervention to mitigate smog levels.
Justice Shahid Karim, presiding over the case brought forth by citizen Haroon Farooq among others, instructed the traffic police to initiate a stringent crackdown on vehicles contributing to air pollution.
Additionally, the Motorway Police were tasked with combating stubble burning, a significant contributor to smog.
The court also issued a stern warning to the Inspector General of the Motorway Police, stating that failure to enforce these measures could lead to contempt of court proceedings.
During the same session, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) presented a report on heatstroke, highlighting that an awareness campaign has been initiated.
The report also noted that 20 water bowsers have been deployed to the Cholistan region to help alleviate water shortages amid the hot weather conditions. The hearing has been adjourned until next Friday.
