RAWALAKOT: In a dramatic jailbreak at Rawalakot District Jail, over 20 inmates escaped after taking police officers hostage on Sunday.
According to the police, the prisoners initiated an attack, firing at the officers, which resulted in the injury of one inmate who was subsequently recaptured.
Authorities identified the escaped individuals as highly dangerous criminals, some of whom were serving life sentences or were on death row. A shootout occurred on the city’s outskirts during a police pursuit, resulting in the death of one of the escaped inmates.
In response to the escape, the police have launched a comprehensive manhunt, deploying a large contingent of officers and releasing the names of the fugitives to the public.
SSP Rawalakot confirmed that a search operation is actively ongoing to apprehend the escapees and ensure community safety.
Further complicating matters, the deceased inmate was reportedly involved in drug trafficking. Following the escape, the entire staff of the district jail has been detained for questioning, and a thorough investigation into the breakout has been initiated.
Separately, a similar incident occurred in Chaman, Balochistan, where several inmates overpowered guards during a routine movement for Fajr prayers. The prisoners from barrack No. 4 managed to escape after a sudden and coordinated attack on the guards.
