Former Information Minister for Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and currently senior memebr of Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) Fayyazul Hasan Chohan has made a bizzare statement, claiming that Pakistan won the 1992 cricket World Cup due to ‘artificial rain’. Chohan made the bizarre claim on a podcast.
“Pakistan lost two of its first four matches, won one of them and one was a draw. The draw was the result of artificial rain that was arranged by Goldsmith’s England”, he said.
In the 13th match of the tournament Pakistan was bowled out by England for 74 runs. Rain saved the day as the match was abandoned with no result. The points were shared.
“Had it not rained, England would have easily chased down the paltry target in 10 overs. But that rain, which was artificial, allowed them to advance”, Chohan added.
Pakistan was captained by Imran Khan in the 1992 World Cup. The former Prime Minister and founder of PTI is currently incarcerated in Adiala jail facing various cases. Khan’s first wife was Jemima Goldsmith, daughter of influential and wealth financier, tycoon and politician James Goldsmith.
Imran Khan is often accused of using the influence of the Goldsmiths. It seems Chohan was alleging that the so-called artificial rain was the result of the Goldsmiths influence on England’s power circles at the time to favour Imran Khan.
Chohan is known to make controversial statements. He has made derogatory and distasteful statements against Pakistan’s stage actors and the Hindu community.
There is absolutely no evidence to support Chohan’s claims of ‘artificial rain’ being arranged by the Goldsmith family in a 1992 cricket world cup match to help Imran Khan win the tournament.
