IHC serves notices to PTA, PEMRA, three journalists in contempt campaign case

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday served notices to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and three journalists over social media campaign against Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.

Headed by Chief Justice Amir Farooq, a 7-member bench of Islamabad High Court comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz heard the social media contempt case.

Justice Jahangiri was not part of the full court bench. The court during the hearing called Additional Attorney General Munaur Iqbal to explain the stance of the government on the matter.

Chief Justice IHC Amir Farooq expressing concern over the government’s silence on the social media campaign targeting judges said that it seems that the government was behind this campaign.

Justice Gul Hasan Aurangzeb asked the Additional Attorney General “The government’s silence suggests that they are involved in this.”

Issuing notices to PEMRA, PTA and three journalists, the IHC adjourned the hearing until after the summer vacations.
