Following a directive from the Ministry of Interior, the deployment of Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Frontier Corps personnel has been authorized in Sindh during Muharram.
This move comes after the Sindh Home Department requested additional security forces to manage potential security threats during this sensitive period.
Troops will be deployed under the legal framework of Sections 4 and 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, tasked with supporting the civil administration throughout the region. The Interior Ministry has stated that the military assistance is aimed at enhancing civil order during the month.
The operational details will be tailored to the specific security needs on the ground, with provincial officials overseeing the deployment. Preparations include coordinated planning between the Sindh Home Department and military leaders to ensure effective placement of forces.
The beginning of Muharram was officially marked with the sighting of the crescent, setting Youm-e-Ashur (10th of Muharram) to be observed on Wednesday, July 17, as confirmed by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
The historical significance of Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, calls for heightened security measures due to past disturbances during this period.
In related developments, the Punjab government’s recent proposal to suspend certain internet services and social media from Muharram 6 to 11 to prevent the spread of incendiary material was not approved. Instead, the focus remains on physical security enhancements during the commemorations.
