Respecting the spirit of Muharram

AS the holy month of Muharram began, there were some congratulatory messages people received about the beginning of the new year. The month, as we all know, is about mourning the tragedy of Karbala, and all Muslims, regardless of any divide, should keep their focus in this regard.

It is also equally important that all those addressing majalis should avoid irresponsible behaviour and speeches. They should be careful about the selection of what they want to say and how. Every word, every gesture should show care and respect for all. We should not forget that Imam Hussain did everything to keep us on the right path. And majalis should not distract us from his teachings about being a civilized human being. Also, majalis and mourning processions should not create hurdles in the way of other citizens, especially women and the elderly. The focus should be on keeping life peaceful and normal as much as possible.

Imam Hussain’s message should be understood and practised in letter and in spirit by all the people. In Pakistan, we tend to go to extremes in every sphere of life. Let Muharram be an exception.
