Ashura observed with reverence nationwide under stringent security measures

Nationwide processions marking Yaum-e-Ashura unfolded amidst solemnity and heightened security measures across Pakistan.

This annual observance on Muharram 10 pays homage to Imam Husain, the revered grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and other martyrs of Karbala.

President Asif Ali Zardari underscored the enduring lesson of courage and steadfastness imparted by the martyrs of Karbala to the Muslim Ummah. He called upon the nation to embrace forbearance, justice, and compassion for the less fortunate, stressing unity in confronting cruelty and adversity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed similar sentiments, urging the public to draw inspiration from the bravery and resilience exemplified by the martyrs of Karbala. He emphasized the values of equality, tolerance, and discipline as essential in addressing both internal and external challenges faced by the country.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reflected on the universal significance of Imam Hussain’s sacrifice, describing it as a guiding light for humanity. He praised the role of law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace during the holy month of Muharram and acknowledged the efforts of scholars in promoting harmony.

In response to security concerns, the interior ministry deployed the army nationwide and imposed restrictions on drone usage during processions and gatherings until Ashura. In Sindh, 59,000 policemen were mobilized to ensure the security of processions, with additional measures such as bans on pillion riding and carrying licensed weapons implemented across the province.

In Lahore, the main procession commenced from Nisar Haveli in Mohalla Chillah Bibian, culminating at Karbala Ghamay Shah Imambargah. Similar processions in Karachi followed traditional routes under strict security protocols, with MA Jinnah Road closed from Guru Mandir to Tower for safety reasons.

Traffic management plans were meticulously enforced in major cities like Karachi, Peshawar, and Lahore to facilitate safe participation in processions. The authorities implemented diversions and restrictions to ensure smooth flow and prevent disruptions during the solemn observance.

Yaum-i-Ashura serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice, resilience, and unity for Muslims worldwide, with Pakistan demonstrating a collective commitment to honoring this important day amidst the challenges of contemporary times.
