Punjab deploys AI cameras to curb traffic violations, pollution

LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) led Punjab government has cautioned citizens about traffic violations, announcing that offenders will now receive electronic challans with proof and heavy fines, enforced using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed transport authorities to crack down on vehicles emitting excessive smoke, utilizing modern cameras from the Punjab Safe City project. AI technology is being employed to detect and measure the smoke emissions from vehicles, motorcycles, and auto-rickshaws.

The Lahore Traffic Police have begun issuing hundreds of challans to vehicles that exceed acceptable emission levels, targeting trucks, buses, cars, wagons, auto-rickshaws, and motorcycles. Each electronic ticket includes an image of the offending vehicle emitting smoke, captured by modern cameras.

Senior Minister Punjab, Maryam Aurangzeb, stated that both environmental protection and the enforcement of traffic regulations are being achieved through the use of modern technology and cameras. This initiative aims to reduce pollution and ensure adherence to traffic laws across the province.
