Five years on: APHC condemns August 5 military siege of Kashmir

SRINAGAR: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has declared August 5 as another day of exploitation, mourning, and black mark for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which they describe as having become a vast open-air prison.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Modi administration, in blatant violation of United Nations resolutions and international law, repealed the special status of IIOJK and imposed an unprecedented military siege on August 5, 2019.

APHC spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas stated in Srinagar that the BJP/RSS-led Indian government has stripped Kashmiris of their political, social, and religious rights. The actions taken on August 5, 2019, were a direct assault on Kashmir’s unique identity, culture, employment, demography, and fundamental rights.

He described August 5 as one of the most tragic, painful, and catastrophic days in the modern history of occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He urged the oppressed Kashmiri people to observe a complete strike and commemorate August 5 as Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir (Kashmir Exploitation Day) and Black Day.

Marking the fifth anniversary of the Indian siege, he emphasized that the day was when Hindutva forces, in blatant disregard of international law and United Nations resolutions, annulled the special status of IIOJK, depriving its people of all political, social, cultural, economic, and religious rights.

Describing August 5 as a ‘Day of Mourning’ for Kashmiris, he condemned the revocation of special status as the worst form of dacoity, a major theft, and an attack on the identity, culture, and basic rights of the Kashmiri people. He called for strikes across all regions of IIOJK.

Furthermore, he stated that August 5 was the day when the New Delhi-controlled Hindutva regime, utilizing all its military might, resources, and institutions, launched an assault on Kashmir and deprived its people of their basic rights.
