A new book has reportedly disclosed that Prince William once briefly broke up with Kate Middleton three years before they became engaged. According to a private news outlet, Robert Jobson’s new biography, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, delves into the circumstances surrounding the royal couple’s separation in 2007.
Jobson’s book reveals that Catherine understood William was in no rush to propose and was willing to wait until he was ready, as they were in love. However, when William unexpectedly canceled their New Year’s Eve plans in 2006, Kate sensed something was amiss. Shortly after, William called her to break up, explaining that they needed “a bit of space” to “find our own way” and that he couldn’t promise a proposal.
In a reportedly emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, the two acknowledged they were on “different pages,” which was a devastating blow to Catherine, who felt particularly hurt by the breakup happening over the phone.
Following the split, William was seen at the Mahiki nightclub in London, while Kate traveled to Dublin with her mother, Carole Middleton, and later to Ibiza with a friend. However, William soon began having “second thoughts” and reunited with Kate at a “Freakin Naughty”-themed costume party hosted by jockey Sam Waley-Cohen. Kate, dressed as a nurse, caught William’s attention, leading to a deep conversation and eventually dancing and kissing on the dance floor.
The couple reconciled in 2007, became engaged in 2010, and married at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. They now have three children. In an interview after their engagement, they addressed their brief breakup. William mentioned that they were both very young and finding themselves, which necessitated some space and growth. Kate reflected on the breakup, saying it was difficult at the time but ultimately made her a stronger person.
