Torrential rains wreak havoc in Balochistan, 12 dead and 32 injured

QUETTA/RAJHANPUR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has confirmed that recent torrential rains in Balochistan have led to the deaths of 12 individuals, including five children, due to lightning strikes, roof collapses, and other related incidents.

In addition to the fatalities, 32 people have sustained injuries, among them three women and ten children. The severe weather has also caused considerable damage to property, affecting 263 houses, destroying 312 acres of crops, and damaging 19 kilometers of roads. Furthermore, 106 animals have perished in incidents related to the storms.

The PDMA, in coordination with district administrations, is actively providing relief to those affected by the rains.

The meteorological office had previously forecasted heavy monsoon rains across the country from August 1 to August 6. Regions such as Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Punjab, South Punjab, Sindh including Karachi, and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to experience significant rainfall during this period, with potential flash flooding in susceptible areas including Murree, Galliyat, northeast Punjab, and the hill torrents of D.G Khan.

Heavy rainfall at Koh-e-Sulaiman has triggered severe flooding in Punjab’s Rajanpur district, disrupting land connections between several areas and cities. A man named Rashid Friday was swept away by the Rod-e-Kohi flood torrents, with ongoing search efforts to locate him now entering their second day.

The floodwaters have inundated several areas in Rojhan, submerging houses and crops, with many structures collapsing under the force of the water. Affected residents are currently awaiting aid from the administration.
