Ongoing landslide in Balakot prompts evacuation, fears of new lake

BALAKOT: In the Mahandri area of Balakot, a major landslide is causing significant concern as a mountain begins to slide into the Kunhar River. This geological shift is threatening over 40 households in the vicinity with potential devastation.

The landslide is continuously obstructing the river’s flow, which could potentially alter the river’s course and lead to the formation of a new lake. Such changes pose severe risks to both lives and property in the area. Local residents are already witnessing structural damages to their homes, with visible cracks compelling many to evacuate.

The situation is increasingly critical, with local authorities and residents anxiously anticipating further developments. The potential formation of a new lake due to the ongoing landslide is a major concern, highlighting the urgent need for intervention and support to mitigate the impact on the affected community.
