JI announces country-wide shutter-down strike on Aug 28 over high electricity bills

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced a country-wide “peaceful” shutter-down strike on August 28 to protest against high electricity bills and demand a uniform power tariff across Pakistan.

Speaking at the party’s office in Idara Noore Haq, Karachi, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticized opposition parties for their confusion regarding protests against the government. He reaffirmed that JI would not join any political alliances and emphasized that the party’s alliance is with the youth and people of Pakistan.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also highlighted issues such as worsening law and order in Punjab and economic challenges faced by the public. He criticized expensive RLNG agreements and warned of potential international legal actions by IPPs if contracts are violated. He expressed concern over the impact of the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Tajir Dost scheme on traders and exports.

In a related development, the traders’ community has announced a strike on August 28 against the Tajir Dost scheme, demanding its withdrawal and a reversal of heavy taxes on the export sector. The All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran, along with other traders’ associations, has labeled the scheme as unacceptable.
