KURRAM: Fresh violence has erupted in Kurram District, with gunfire reported between rival factions in the Shingak area, leading to four fatalities and two injuries.
Yesterday, assailants on motorcycles opened fire on individuals working in the fields in the Shingak border area. This attack resulted in two deaths and three injuries, with local residents pursuing the attackers and reportedly killing two of them.
Dr. Syed Meer Hasan, medical superintendent at Parachinar DHQ, confirmed that two bodies and five injured individuals were brought to the hospital for treatment. He noted that clashes in Kurram often occur monthly and usually result in significant casualties. However, a recent trend has seen casualties arriving at the hospital every few days due to ongoing gunfire.
Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mahsud described the incident as an act of terrorism, stating that an investigation is underway and indicating that certain groups are implicated in the violence.
Meanwhile, tribal elders have raised alarms over the ongoing closure of main and link roads, warning that it could lead to a severe humanitarian crisis due to critical shortages of food, medicine, and fuel in Kurram District.
Members of a Grand Jirga, including tribal leaders from Hangu, Orakzai, and Kohat, criticized the government for its inaction, asserting that despite repeated ceasefire agreements, no substantial measures have been taken to uphold these accords.
They emphasized the necessity for government intervention in cases where agreements are violated, arguing that without such action, these accords lack any real significance.
Elders from the Turi and Bangash tribes have expressed growing concerns over road closures, which have exacerbated food and fuel shortages and heightened fears of a major humanitarian emergency in the region.
