Rawalpindi court dismisses police cases against students protesting alleged Lahore rape

RAWALPINDI: A Rawalpindi court has dismissed all police cases against students involved in protests concerning issues at a private college.

This ruling follows legal action initiated by the government against students accused of vandalism during demonstrations. The court underscored the importance of peaceful protest and the protection of student rights in its decision.

Earlier, on Thursday, Punjab Police arrested hundreds of students and alleged miscreants from various cities, accusing them of vandalizing private college campuses across the province, including Lahore. These protests erupted over an unconfirmed and alleged rape case involving female students on campus.

Lahore became the focal point of the protests after the alleged assault ignited widespread outrage. Students and others vandalized property, set motorcycles on fire, and clashed with police forces.

The Lahore Police filed a case at the Harbanspura police station, with sub-inspector Usman Akbar citing that 200 to 250 unidentified individuals were involved in the disturbances.

The FIR indicated that protesters attacked police with petrol bombs, leading to the destruction of six motorcycles and significant damage to the college. As part of the crackdown, police have arrested 24 individuals linked to the vandalism.
