Punjab greenlights historic steps to combat pollution, eliminate single-use plastics

  • CM Maryam Nawaz chairs 18th meeting of provincial cabinet to approve PDA, PW&SA, and PHA Acts 2024 among other initiatives

LAHORE: The Punjab cabinet, in its 18th meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday, approved several significant measures, with main focus on environmental protection, education, and development.

Key among these measures was a historic measure to combat pollution and eliminate single-use plastics in the province.

The cabinet approved an amendment to the Provincial Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965, increasing fines for vehicles emitting smoke. Vehicles operating without a Vehicle Fitness Certificate will now face penalties and impoundment after a one-time notice. This step is part of broader efforts to improve air quality and curb environmental degradation.

In a landmark decision, District Plastic Management Committees have been set up to enforce the ban on single-use plastics across Punjab. Chaired by the DC and DPO, these committees will have the authority to impose fines and take action against factories producing non-environment-friendly plastic bags. Factories that fail to meet quality and environmental standards may face closure and legal consequences. To support these efforts, the cabinet also approved the recruitment of 310 Environment Minute Inspectors and the purchase of 250 e-bikes for their use.

Another important decision was the establishment of the Punjab Examination, Curriculum, Training, and Assessment Authority (PECTAA), which will play a key role in enhancing the education system. In line with the government’s commitment to education, CM Maryam Nawaz directed that laptops under the Chief Minister’s Laptop Scheme be distributed to students promptly.

The cabinet also approved the launch of Khelta Punjab Games 2024, an under-16 talent hunt program. Over 115,000 young athletes have already registered, and 6,000 youths will be given internships in the sports department with a monthly stipend of Rs 25,000. Additionally, private universities will offer free education to 50 young athletes in a bid to promote sports alongside academics.

In another significant initiative, the cabinet approved the Chief Minister Punjab Livestock Card for small farmers, aiming to produce 200,000 animals annually. The scheme will also extend benefits to larger farmers.

Furthermore, the cabinet passed the Punjab Development Authority (PDA), Punjab Water and Sanitation Authority (PW&SA), and Punjab Horticulture Authority (PHA) Acts 2024, laying the groundwork for significant infrastructural advancements in the province.

On a cultural note, CM Maryam Nawaz proposed the issuance of a Festival Card for Hindu and Sikh communities in Punjab, which will provide Rs10,000 to 2,200 families during Guru Nanak’s birthday and Diwali celebrations.

Additionally, the cabinet gave the green light for recruitment to fill grade 1 to 15 vacancies in wildlife parks and approved the opening of technical universities in the province to promote vocational training.
