PM, other leaders congratulate Donald Trump on historic second term victory

NEW YORK: In response to Trump’s victory on Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alongside other political leaders, extended congratulations on what he described as a “historic second-term victory.”

In a message shared on social media, Sharif expressed his eagerness to work with the incoming U.S. administration, hoping to build on the longstanding partnership between Pakistan and the United States.

It may be noted that Donald Trump has been re-elected as the 47th President of the United States, marking a remarkable political comeback four years after losing the White House.

The Republican candidate defeated Democratic rival Kamala Harris in a closely watched race that will shape the future of U.S. politics and its international relations.

Opposition leader and PTI member Omar Ayub Khan also offered his congratulations to Trump and his Vice President-elect, JD Vance, expressing hope that the new U.S. leadership would foster better ties between Pakistan and the U.S.

In his message, Khan noted that the victory was a testament to the will of the American people, adding that the people of Pakistan look forward to a constructive relationship.

The PTI’s official statement highlighted the stark contrast between the U.S. elections and Pakistan’s political situation, where they allege the public mandate was not respected. This comes amid ongoing legal and political challenges for PTI founder Imran Khan, who had close ties with Trump during his tenure as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), also congratulated Trump on his victory, calling it a “resounding win.” He described Trump’s success as a victory for peace and expressed hopes that the Trump administration would focus on ending global conflicts and prioritizing diplomatic solutions.
