LAHORE: In a decisive move to curb air pollution, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has banned the use of smoke-emitting commercial generators in designated ‘green lockdown’ zones. Justice Shahid Karim issued the order while hearing petitions aimed at tackling the city’s growing smog crisis.
The court mandated the installation of pollution control devices in commercial generators within seven days, directing authorities to seal any non-compliant equipment until necessary modifications are made.
To further improve air quality, the court ordered the removal of encroachments in high-pollution areas and acknowledged efforts by the government and the environment director general, applauding their initiatives to address the environmental crisis.
The court noted that superseeds were distributed to farmers as part of a broader effort to discourage crop burning, a significant contributor to smog. Additionally, the Lahore Division commissioner was tasked with presenting a report on the operations of Kasur tanneries within 15 days.
Meanwhile, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) director general has been directed to act on an inquiry report regarding underpass renovations. The case has been adjourned until Friday for further proceedings.
