Casey Affleck Explains Why Ben Affleck Carves the Turkey at Thanksgiving

Casey Affleck is gearing up for Thanksgiving with his family, revealing that his brother, Ben Affleck, handles carving the turkey each year. “I don’t eat turkey, so that’s him,” Casey, 49, exclusively told Us Weekly during The Center at West Park’s (CWP) 2nd Annual Fall Benefit in New York City on Thursday, Nov. 14. The actor shared his excitement about spending the holiday with his two sons, Indiana, 20, and Atticus, 16, adding that his oldest son is back from college in Europe for the festivities.

The Affleck family holiday traditions often involve coordinating across different locations. “We’re one of those families where you do, like, this year here or the next year there, at my dad’s, and then my mom comes to us,” Casey explained, noting the challenge of being spread out geographically. Past celebrations have included close family friends Matt Damon, his wife Luciana Barroso, and their daughters, though Casey acknowledged it’s harder to coordinate now that he lives in Los Angeles while the Damons are based in New York.

Casey also reflected on his involvement in the CWP Fall Benefit, where he performed in Lobby Hero, a Kenneth Lonergan play alongside Josh Radnor, Aubrey Plaza, and Jamie Hector. The benefit raised funds for artistic spaces in New York City, a cause close to Lonergan, who also wrote and directed Manchester by the Sea, the film that earned Casey his 2017 Best Actor Oscar. “It’s never not fun to do a Kenneth Lonergan play,” Casey shared, adding that the cause “feels really important.”

The evening highlighted the importance of fostering creative spaces in New York City, with co-star Hector emphasizing, “Being able to say words and transform into something different and just be around people you want to be around. It’s very important.” With Thanksgiving approaching, Casey is looking forward to balancing his professional commitments with quality time spent with family.
