PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has pledged to restore student unions in educational institutions, announcing plans to introduce legislation backed by consensus.
During a provincial assembly session on Friday, Pakistan Peoples Party’s Parliamentary Leader Ahmed Kundi highlighted the issue, reminding the assembly of the Chief Minister’s previous commitment to reinstating student unions. Kundi also referenced Sindh’s revival of unions, expressing optimism that KP would follow suit to strengthen democratic practices in academic institutions.
Higher Education Minister Meena Khan affirmed the government’s intent, revealing that a task force established in 2013 had recommended restoring student unions. He assured the assembly that the revival would be achieved through unanimous legislation and emphasized the importance of giving students representation in relevant forums.
“The revival of unions will empower students and encourage democratic engagement within educational institutions in KP,” Khan remarked.
This move is seen as a significant step toward fostering an environment of participation and leadership among students, aligning with broader democratic principles in the province.
