ISLAMABAD: Discussions between the government and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) regarding the registration of religious seminaries (madrasas) are progressing, with both sides exploring a collaborative framework.
According to sources, the government is open to considering a new draft for the registration process and is weighing various options to secure JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s agreement. These options include honoring the 2019 agreement between the two parties and revising the registration mechanisms for madrasas.
Potential approaches under discussion include registering madrasas under the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Interior. The government has also expressed readiness to allow registration through the Deputy Commissioner (DC) in conjunction with the Ministry of Interior, should new legislation mandate such provisions.
JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman is expected to consult with his party’s Shura (consultative body) and representatives of religious institutions before solidifying his position on the matter.
The government’s legal team, along with Senator Kamran Murtaza, is anticipated to play a pivotal role in finalizing the terms of the agreement. The talks reflect efforts to balance regulatory oversight with respect for the independence of religious seminaries.
