LHC extends stay on FIR against Babar Azam, summons complainant

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday summoned the woman who accused Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam of harassment, to appear before the court on December 12.

The court also extended its suspension of a trial court’s directive to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to register an FIR against Azam.

Justice Muhammad Waheed Khan presided over the hearing, where Babar’s counsel, Haris Azmat, argued that the earlier sessions court decision to file a case had been made without considering Azam’s perspective. Responding to the argument, the LHC reiterated its March 22, 2021, decision to suspend the sessions court order.

The case revolves around allegations wherein Azam has been accused of blackmail, harassment, and threats. The woman had previously claimed that Azam sexually exploited her, coerced her into an abortion, and made false promises of marriage.

The LHC’s latest summons signals another chapter in the ongoing legal battle between Mukhtar and Babar Azam, whose counsel maintains that the allegations are baseless.
