NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Chaudhry has strongly condemned the rising incidents of mob lynching, hate speeches, and demolition of houses, particularly targeting Muslims in India.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Chaudhry criticized the government for failing to protect the rights of minorities, despite the Constitution’s guarantees.
Chaudhry emphasized that Muslims are being targeted solely due to their religious identity, citing the recent killings in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. She questioned the silence of the Uttar Pradesh government and accused them of promoting hate crimes. The MP also slammed the government for failing to implement Supreme Court guidelines to curb mob lynching.
The Samajwadi lawmaker criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to direct owners of eateries and shops to display their name plates, calling it an attack on Muslim livelihoods. She also mentioned the incident of a Muslim doctor being denied a house in a Hindu-majority area of Moradabad, highlighting the impact of communal policies and statements.
Chaudhry pointed out that hate speech not only affects the general public but also influences those in constitutional positions. She cited the recent remarks made by a judge of the Allahabad High Court, which prompted the Supreme Court to take notice.
The MP emphasized that the Constitution grants minorities the right to run their institutions, but these institutions are under attack from the government. She cited examples such as the Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Act and the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
Chaudhry concluded by stressing the need to ensure that no person lives in fear due to their religious identity. She urged the government to recognize that snatching rights leads to disturbed peace.
