President pledges nation’s commitment to global fight against cancer

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the global fight against cancer, urging collective action, innovation, and resilience on the occasion of World Cancer Day, observed on February 4.

In a statement, the president highlighted cancer as one of the leading causes of death, emphasizing the need to address the disease amid challenges such as rapid urbanization, lifestyle changes, and limited public awareness.

“This day is a reminder of the profound challenges posed by this disease and an opportunity to inspire hope through collective action,” President Zardari said.

He stressed that the government, in collaboration with provincial authorities, healthcare institutions, and international partners, is working to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure, develop comprehensive cancer strategies, and mobilize resources through public-private partnerships.

“Cancer is not only a health issue but also a societal challenge requiring joint efforts,” the president noted, urging media outlets to play an essential role in educating people about cancer symptoms, prevention, and early detection.

He called upon healthcare professionals, civil society, and the private sector to work together to ensure access to timely diagnoses, effective treatment, and compassionate care for all, regardless of socioeconomic status.

President Zardari expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to make cancer prevention and control a national priority, saying, “Together, we can bring hope and healing to those affected and honor the lives lost to this disease.”

The President Secretariat Press Wing reiterated that the observance of World Cancer Day is a reminder to continue efforts in raising awareness, providing quality care, and alleviating the burden of the disease through sustained cooperation among all stakeholders.
