Trump, Pope Francis, and NATO’s Stoltenberg possibly nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

WASHINGTON: The list of nominees for the prestigious 2025 Nobel Peace Prize includes over 300 individuals and organizations, with speculation surrounding prominent figures such as former US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis.

According to the Norwegian Nobel Institute, a total of 338 nominations have been submitted this year, comprising 244 individuals and 94 organizations. While the Nobel Committee maintains strict confidentiality regarding nominees for 50 years, Trump and Pope Francis have been widely mentioned, alongside former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

US Congressman Darrell Issa publicly stated that he had nominated Trump for the award, citing his efforts in promoting peace in the Middle East.

Although Issa’s submission came after the official deadline, Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Merezhko had already nominated Trump in November 2024.

Trump has previously been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, often generating heated discussions. His candidacy this year has drawn particular attention, given his diplomatic engagements with Moscow concerning the war in Ukraine and his often contentious relationships with European allies.

Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, thousands have signed a petition advocating for French activist Gisèle Pelicot to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Pelicot gained international recognition for her advocacy following the high-profile trial of her ex-husband, who was convicted of heinous crimes, including drugging her and enabling strangers to assault her.

The final decision on the Nobel Peace Prize recipient will be made after thorough deliberation by the committee. Until then, the identities of all official nominees will remain undisclosed.
