Punjab braces for soaring temperatures as PDMA rolls out heatwave guidelines

LAHORE: The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a province-wide alert amid forecasts of soaring temperatures and potential heatwave conditions, warning of a 4 to 7°C rise this month in major cities, plains, and southern districts.

The alert, circulated to all relevant departments and district administrations, outlines a comprehensive set of precautionary measures aimed at minimizing health and infrastructure impacts during the anticipated heatwave period.

Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia said that proactive steps are being taken to protect citizens, adding that deputy commissioners have been directed to ensure that adequate facilities — such as shade, water, and first aid — are available at key public locations.

District administrations have also been instructed to initiate public awareness drives using mosque announcements, helplines, and media platforms including print, electronic, and social media. These campaigns aim to educate people about the dangers of extreme heat and recommended precautions.

The School Education Department has been ordered to limit children’s outdoor activities and place awareness banners at school entry points, while agricultural departments have been told to keep farmers informed about the possible impact of the heat on crops.

The Local Government Department has been directed to ensure water availability at bus stands, railway stations, and public congregation areas, and to display banners with heat safety guidelines.

Veterinary services have also been mobilized, with instructions to keep care centers functional around the clock and ensure water supplies at livestock markets.

Meanwhile, the Health Department has been tasked with setting up heatwave counters in hospitals, ensuring essential medicines are in stock, and deploying mobile health units and medical camps in busy public areas.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak heat hours, stay well-hydrated, and cover their heads while outdoors. Special caution has been urged for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and individuals with heart conditions.
