Punjab minister defends wheat policy, slams Bilawal for ‘politicising’ farmers’ issues

LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari on Sunday criticised PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for his “harsh language” against Punjab’s leadership, saying his comments were politically motivated and ignored the challenges faced by farmers in Sindh.

Speaking at a press conference at DGPR, Bokhari defended Punjab’s decision not to procure wheat under the government’s new policy, adding that a comprehensive Rs110 billion relief package had been announced for farmers. “We are providing Rs5,000 per acre, launching a Rs25 billion wheat support programme, and issuing Kisan Cards,” she said.

She noted that no province had announced a wheat support price, including Sindh, which had also failed to offer meaningful relief to its farmers. “Those doing politics in the name of farmers are silent on Sindh’s agricultural issues,” she added.

Bokhari said Punjab farmers had received 9,500 tractors under a Rs10 billion subsidy, with another 5,000 super seeders to be distributed on an Rs8 billion subsidy. A special incentive includes a free tractor worth Rs4.5 million for the top wheat producer and Rs1 million awards for the best farmer in each district.

She said the private sector had been allowed to purchase wheat to stabilise the market, while flour mills were bound to buy at least 25% of the crop. “The Bank of Punjab has issued a Rs100 billion credit line, and Rs55 billion worth of purchases have already been made through Kisan Cards,” she said.

The minister said CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif personally prioritises farmer welfare and the government is maintaining a complete record of wheat movement. “The Punjab government not only supports farmers, but the entire population of the province,” she added.
