Rare caracal spotted in Cholistan Desert

RAHIM YAR KHAN: A rare caracal — a medium-sized wild cat known for its stealth and agility — was spotted in the Cholistan Desert near Rahim Yar Khan on Monday morning, marking a significant wildlife sighting in Punjab.

Assistant Chief Wildlife Ranger Mujahid Kalim confirmed the sighting, stating he observed the elusive feline at around 7:30am near a group of rare Chinkara deer, likely while it was stalking its prey. Kalim managed to capture a video of the caracal, which he claimed is the first recorded footage of the species in Punjab.

The caracal, known for its striking features and hunting prowess, is well-adapted to desert life. It hunts desert animals such as rabbits, rats, birds, and deer, sometimes leaping up to 9.8 feet to catch airborne prey. Wildlife officials noted that the Cholistan Desert serves as a natural habitat for the caracal, providing both cover and abundant prey.

Describing its physical attributes, Kalim said the caracal is distinguished by its muscular build, long legs, tufted ears, and reddish-tan coat. Its ventral side is lighter with faint markings, and the animal typically measures between 40 to 50 centimeters at the shoulder, weighing between eight to 19 kilograms.

Globally, the caracal is native to regions spanning Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and arid zones of Pakistan and northwestern India. Its presence in Cholistan underscores the ecological importance of the desert landscape in supporting rare and endangered wildlife.

According to available records, the caracal was first scientifically documented by German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1776.

Wildlife officials hope that such sightings will raise awareness about conservation efforts needed to preserve the delicate ecosystems of the Cholistan Desert and its native species.
